Question Need help of a very good visual basic programmer to teach me about MMOs


Sorry if my English is a little off, it isnt my first language, nonetheless- I am sure that I need help with something regarding communications.

Alright, so I made the framework of a game I want to make into an MMO so far. It has A login screen, shop, rooms (it is a room-based MMO), the lobby, and etc.

I am completely 100% new to communications in Visual Basic, and know hardly anything about it...

But what I would like to know is a few things-

How do I turn my computer(currently) into a server? (I'm getting a real server later on, if the MMO takes off the ground) Is it even possible? If it is, how would I go about programming an application for my computer that would turn it into a server?

For my logins and registrys, I need a server (asked in the previous question) that will hold information, the problem is, how would I go about recieving word that someone on a client logged in, make my server search for the username and password of the records in my server files, and then send word back to the client that they logged in succesfully and let them into the lobby?

A big part of my game relys on Client - Server files- actually, almost all the game does. How would I go about knowing from a client that purchased something from a shop, goes into his own client files, gets the item's picture, check the money from the server to see if the user has enough money, and then if so, purchases the item, and writes in the player file on the server that the player has purchased an item and the stats were changed?

And I also want an IRC set up there... How would I go about making an IRC inside the game?

And finally, the game itself, I need to know when however many clients are playing, has moved, shot, and etc. then I need that info to pass through the server, and go to all the other clients...

Sorry it's such a tall order, I really am in the dark about this stuff, and I am just learning.

P.S. I'm using Visual Basic 6 Enterprise Edition

P.S.S. This is probably a little embarassing to ask, but I forgot the function that is used in captions that skips lines like-

lblCap.Caption = "Yadayadayada" & [COMMAND THAT SKIPS A LINE?] "Yada ;3"

I would start with a VB6 example of a simple client server chat program to get used to the basics.

Depends on your definition of server. By my definition all computers are servers, some just dont serve anything because the program hasnt been created or run. There are hardware servers and software servers. You will probably not need a hardware server for some time since you are just starting

Let's be a little more carefull in wording. I would suggest that you infact need a database, not a server since you will be storing information, not just handing it out. And the embedded question will become apparent after you create the chat program and work with file input/output commands.

This will ultimately be your decision once you get the basics down. It boils down to logic IF, ELSEIF, etc This is going to be the part that at a general level no one can really help you. Once you have your variables setup and being used then you can use them in logic statements

Ah, yes the IRC. Well infact you wont need a IRC channel because you can reuse the code from the chat application

Just more logic statements, again this is going to consist of the bulk of your code.

Are you looking for VBCrLf ??

And I almost forgot: Get a book, no get at least TWO books on VB6, they have to be dirt cheap by now since .NET has taken over. I bought two back when vb6 was in its prime for $40 each. Ouch
