Question Using Winsock in a LAN with no Web Connection?

I want to set up a wireless LAN which is NOT connected to the internet and then use winsock (or any other mechanism for that matter) so that different PCs can talk to each other (maybe via one PC arbitrarily chosen as the "server")

The reason for this is that it will just be used for computation so if there are say ten PCs they will just all work on the problem until one of them finds it appropriate to send info to some or all of the others. So the web is irrelevant and this will save worrying about viruses etc (OK, so no updates but I can live with that)

Obviously each PC will not have an IP Address - can I use the MAC address of each PC somehow - I believe the router maps MACS to IP address?

Or am I up a gum tree here?

Any help appreciated
Bob

The winsock control is simply a wrapper around the underlying tcp/ip networking stack, it will not work unless you have tcp/ip installed on the machines in question.

I am not sure why you say

as there is nothing stopping you installing the tcp/ip protocol on the machines and assigning an ip address to them, a connection to the internet is not a prerequisite for having an ip address.

You need some network protocol layer, though it need not be TCP/IP. However the likely alternatives were NetBEUI (dropped after Win2K, can be forced onto XP but no later) and IPX (dropped after XP).

Since your wireless access point is likely to be embedded in a wireless router, you can use manually assigned IP addresses or DHCP.

The router only deals directly with MAC addresses when requests are made to assign IP addresses via DHCP. Well that and low-level switching of packets.
