Default Remote connection with UNC path

Hi,

My networking skills are a little sketchy, but hopefully someone will help.

I use a UNC path to access the directory where a Database is stored, but this path is not constant especially if someone is connecting via a VPN.
The whole reason for using a UNC was so that it would work independently of drive letters etc.

The database is on a server share and belongs to a department who are all part of a domain. The problem seems to be when people not in that domain but who have access try to connect over a VPN.

I know that the official UNC format is: \\servername\sharename\path\filename
but the ones in this case appear to have more sections.

The normal UNC path is \\Part1\Part2\Part3\Folder, but this changes to \\one-two-three.Part1\Folder over the VPN
Note that I've kept the respective names of the sections the same.

This different path causes some File not found errors.

Does anyone know why this happens and of a way to have a fixed path for accessing a directory/share?

Many thanks in advance.

Default

I found out that one of the paths was the real root and the other was a dfs root. Changing to the real file locatoin has resolved the issue.
