Default HotRodX's PROJECT:MARIO

Here's PROJECT MARIO. It's an on and off project of mine (hey, I got to work). It's still not finished (it's faaaaaar from completion), but I posted it up to show the project's development.

I used modDX7(which I used in Grayden) again to make this game. Now that's code reuse!

The basic game engine is set up. The collision detection is on... however, Mario is still unkillable (though you'd know if there is contact with the enemy). The code is still unoptimized, so you'll see a lot of redundant codes. There's only one enemy type -- goombas. Turtles are giving me a problem.

There's only one level-- but check it out.

Physics is ok. It's still not Mario-esque, but definitely platformer physics.

Requirements-- I don't know, so here's my PC's config:

* Windows 98
* VB 6
* DirectX 7
* 192 MB SDRAM
* 32VRAM AGP
* 1GHz Processor

It'll definitely run on lesser equipped PC's, it's just that I don't know the exact minimum requirements.

Will appreciate comments and some suggestions.

Please use DirectX. Pretty Please.

GO DIRECTX!

lol

To Squirm and matticus_99:

Thanks a lot!

P.S. You can use the joypad to move, if you have one.
The game is slow on XP. All my VB DX7 games are slow on XP. To those with XP: same problem?

Maybe the drivers...

A little, after you optimize your code it may get better.

I'm on Win ME, and that's a seriously cool game. Are you planning on doing more levels? Maybe a complete clone?

Maybe not an exact clone. Some aspects of Mario, I'm not sure I can duplicate 100%. But I'm definitely making more levels.

Office work is keeping me from concentrating on the game. Argh.

As of today, turtles are giving me a problem, cause they hit the background and other sprites. So an instance of the Turtle class should "see" other sprites-- even the background. It's a headache.

Thanks for checking the game up.

Wow! That is really, really good. Did you copy the sprites and stuff straight form the mario game, cause it looks exactly like it.

patmac1 - download the project, open it within vb, and press F5. You must have DirectX7 or above installed for it to work though.

I can't get it to run. It won't open on anything besides VB.

Could you possibly Compile this? The computer I'm on doesn't have ANY version of VB on it and I can't play it.

That would explain why the project code in your "memory game" post had so many syntax errors....I was wondering why you simply didn't fix the errors the VB IDE would raise....

Oh yeah, as forum policy, EXEs are not permitted due to possible problems with viruses etc. Besides, the EXE won't help if you don't have VB because all vb EXEs require runtime files that you won't have.

To Kitaiko:

Yes, I got the sprites and tiles directly from the game.

To ChiefRedBull:

Thanks for helping out patmac1. I wasn't able to reply immediately.

To Zerolimit:

If I'm not mistaken, there's a Visual Basic Learning Edition. The catch is that you can't compile an EXE and you can only use one form. It's free (I think) although I don't know if there's a version 6 of it around.

Great job hotrodx. Had to get rid of all of the DDSCAPS_VIDEOPORT entries because my system doesn't quite know how to handle it . If you don't mind me making a suggestion, if speed ever becomes an issue (it was on my PC), exchange DDSCAPS_SYSTEMMEMORY for DDSCAPS_OFFSCREENPLAIN. I did it for one of my projects, and let's say the speed increase was tangible (FPS changed from 17 to 256). Great game though, and I hope you do more with it.
