Default A Bug in Direct Input?


I think I found a bug with the Key.tostring method.

Check for your self. The DirectInput Tutorial for Keyboard.

Mine was here C:\DXSDK\Samples\VB.Net\DirectInput\Keyboard.


Run the tutorial and press your arrow keys. They will all resolve to strings equaling.

LeftArrow
RightArrow
UpArrow
Down

Notice down does not have the word arrow after it. If you try to read right back what the tostring returned using keystate you must read it as DownArrow.

I am doing key mappings in a settings file for my game. I press a key to map and it saves the word down then when I go to use the key later it doesn't work.

Got to be a bug.

You should report it to directx@microsoft.com so they can look into it and get it fixed.

Just so you don't get yourself disappointed, I have a friend on the DX team at Microsoft, and when I mentioned this to him, he said, "So? Nobody uses those."

That's it, encourage people NOT to report bugs.

Regardless of what your friend says, if this is reported it will get fixed.

I was NOT encouraging him not to report it. I was just relating what I was told by someone who has written books on the subject. In the overall grand scheme of things, there are many issues that we consider "bugs" and are terribly important to us, but just aren't very important to Microsoft. *shrug*
