Default Useful Java links

Sun
java.sun.com is the home of Java and THE place to be for downloads and information concerning Java technology. It's so big that it's easy to get lost, so here are some direct links to the good stuff:

- To develop in Java you need the SDK (Software Development Kit, but Java people speak in abbreviations only). The SDK for the Standard Edition (J2SE) you can get from this page. At the moment I post this the most recent edition is 1.4.2.

- You can get documentation for all API's provided by Sun on http://java.sun.com/api/index.html. If you download the API documentation, editors like JCreator let you integrate it in the Help menu.

- The documentation tells you how all classes work, but if you need more information and examples, Sun also provides tutorials. A good one to start with is The Java Tutorial.

Development tools
When you've installed the SDK, your machine is ready to compile Java code. However, if you don't think that writing a program in NotePad is a very fun thing to do, you'll want a development tool. There are plenty! Here are some examples:
JCreator
JBuilder
Eclipse
BlueJ

Other information
Information about Java is all over the web and any search engine will find you dozens of good sites. So here are just two examples, which both offer tutorials and much more:

Some more Java links for you:

JavaRanch, "a friendly place for Java Greenhorns". Once you get over the somewhat silly farm talk, this turns out to be a good place for (starting) Java programmers. Has a friendly, lively forum. It's also a good place to start if you want to study for Sun's Java certification exams. (Thanks to MKoslof for this one.)

JavaWorld covers all aspects of Java, including Enterprise and Mobile development. Mostly articles on more or less advanced topics. Has a forum too.

The Java Glossary is a good place to browse and find useful info and more links. Also contains treasures like the Java Cheat Sheet and a list of Gotchas that gives you a nice rehearsal on the more tricky features of the Java language.

JavaLobby is mainly a hang-out for Java developers where the latest Java news is discussed, though it does have technical forums too.

Edit: wild wolf gave me this link, for downloading ready-made skins for your Swing applications: http://www.javootoo.com. He also pointed out that I didn't mention Sun's forums.
