How to restore palette after alt-tab

I've now got a grasp on 256 color mode, but the last problem I am having is trying to restore palettes after alt-tabbing. If I change some of the palette entires, I want them to remain that way when the program is restored.
I've tried several strategies to do this, most are restoring my proper palette but failing to restore the changes made to them. I've tried saving a DirectDrawPalette, Array of PALETTEENTRY, or array of a custom structure similar to PALETTEENTRY- and nothing seems to be doing nothing.
