Oh wow! Your going to re-write the X-files by using a 3d graphics program!!!

I've heard Maya is good, and many movies use Maya for their graphics. (Lord of the rings for one)

Don't know how you are going to get the Mulder and Sculley skins from.

The DirectX SDK has an Extras section. In it are plug-ins for 3ds max 3 and 4 and Maya 3 and 4. I've had some trouble with the Maya 4 plug-in in that it sometimes kills that whole program. And the 3ds max 4 plug-in doesn't always do a good job of getting all of your materials correct.

The problem with this solution is that it is for export only. Neither plug-in allows for importing of X files.

The best convertion tool I've found for X files is Deep Exploration 2.0 (it's the replacement for 3D Exploration) it's rather expensive but you can download a 30-day trial version from www.righthemisphere.com It's seriously worth a look. But as far as a pure X file modeling program, I've never seen one.
