I wonder what happens if you turn it up?

Yeah, I sort of figured the 54 degrees was Celsius. Unlike the stubbornness of our civilian population here in the U.S. the military and nearly all trans-border commerce adapted to reality long ago.

Neither the emitter/radiator nor the reflector look quite right for infrared to me, but since I don't see in those bands nor does the photography or my monitor reproduce them I couldn't say. Looks more like a microwave source to me but I assume the article would say so if true. Perhaps far infrared?

Would the emitter be a large cluster of high power infrared LEDs? An infrared laser would make the large reflector superfluous I'd think. A simple resistive heat source would probably melt, so maybe just a thermal junction device made of refractory materials? Still, Tungsten doesn't melt until over 3000C.

Probably doesn't make much of a squirrel gun though. It just doesn't look quite agile enough and 54C is probably close to body temp for a squirrel.

Oops, guess I was wrong: http://www.squirrels.org/raising.html

The folks at http://www.metalstorm.com/ have a method of firing 120,000 live amunition rounds per minute. Much cooler than this sissy death-ray crap.

Though probably significantly more effective at riot control I do not think 120,000 rounds into a live crowd would make for good press.

I wonder...if these technologies are being publicized now then what is going through development and testing at places such as Groom Lake?

OLED-fiber fabric optically active camo vehicle skins and jumpsuits, preceding near-invisible ones with those that simply adapt their color schemes and patterns to ambient surroundings and backgrounds. Chemical discharge MASER shells. Teleoperated micro-aircraft and semi-autonomous swarms. Bolos and 4- and 6-wheel ATV scale mini-Bolos. Standing-wave EM warhead devices.

I thought this was a wind-up until I saw this http://www.raytheon.com/feature/rtn07_dod/
Quote:
The millimeter-wave beam, which is not microwave energy...
milliwave energy?

Apparently 10,000 people have been exposed to it over the past 12 years (yes, 12) and none have had any adverse / permanent side-effects. I seem to remember similar things being stated after Bikini Atol.
The Videos of it in action, here: https://www.jnlwp.com/ActiveDenialSystem.asp#mediaDay are an absolute scream ("The Individual Exposure" one in particular. "Now you see him, now you don't")

I thought KFC had been using this technology for years.

I'm not an Opthamist but I suspect that 1/64 inch penetration at 130 degrees (F) for 2 seconds wouldn't do a retina a lot of good.
