Default Avatar Blues!

Hey! I have a complaint to make: I don't think that you should make a person need 25 posts to have a custom avatar. Why is this? I'm not really upset, I am just curios as to why it isn't allowed?

I guess it's to prevent newbies from signing up to make one post,
and putting an avatar under their name, which takes up space on
the server. Although, it's not much space for each avatar, but if everyone
did it, it'd add up.

It doesn't take long to get 25 post anyway.

I can't speak for those running the board, but my own opinion as for the reasons users below 25 posts can not have avatars is the following:

Storing avatars on the server takes up limitied hard drive space, and hard drive space cost money, so you'd want to give this only to those people who've shown that they are active members of the forum.

And anyways, 25 posts is not really all that many. Thinker makes that many a day! (or is that a minute! )

The whole point of an avatar is to be recognizable to other people. Giving an avatar to someone who has never posted, or has posted only rarely, is not an effective use of resources.

Of the 12000+ members on this forum, only 749 have 25 posts or more and can have an avatar. Thus the amount of space saved is around 11000 * 13K or 143MB.

Yes, Very nice Are those stats exact? I wish there was someway to purge the members list to delete everyone who hasnt posted since a certain date or something. That would save a lot of space too.

Fair Enuf! I stand corrected (I'm a guy that knows when he is beat! ). Guess your right and I actually agree with making you have 25 posts now.

Plus you can take the time it takes you to make 25 posts to find the right avatar for you.

Well, despite what I posted, I don't think it makes that big of a difference....most posters won't go to the trouble of setting up an avatar in the first place unless they plan to be here for awhile, in which case the 25 post limit is moot.

I guess it is more of a test of commitment. If you are going to stick around and contribute, then you get an avatar. If you just want to ask a question and then disappear, you don't.

Of course, we get posters who then try to run up their post count, usually in Random thoughts, just to try and get an Avatar. We (the moderators) in turn try and discourage that by deleting those posts and reducing their postcount.

I guess we just like to keep the focus on VB and other programming issues rather than things like Avatars.

Yea, you could even set the forums not related to programming such as these two so that they dont add to your post count. That would probably help a lot unless then the spammers moved to the other forums and spammed. Making like 10 threads on the same thing over a time period of 2 days or something.

Bob does so every six months or so. He also purges those with bad or bouncing email addresses.. so beware!

ugh!! that is a long way to get a custom title
anyways i am not planning to get one until i am firmly in visual basic.
I dabbled too much in wide field of programming. It is like being a butterfly fluttering from one programming language to another
It really stinks not to specialize in one language cuz you become a 'plug and play' programmer who can be stick and taken off projects like stick-it papers
