Default Best way to store Vars

What's the best way to store Variables for a program, when you close it, like directories, settings, etc.

It must be easy to store and easy to get the one you need, whithout looking through all stored settings.

it depends on your application usage..
I would prefer .ini file because it is easier to change settings manually.
