Question Retrieving XML in a stored procedure

Does anyone have a method to retrieve an XML document in a stored procedure. I know that you can use 'OpenXML' to have SQL server parse an XML document to represent the data, but MSs examples require you to pass the XML data to the stored procedure.
How can I have SQL server retrieve the document from a URL on it's own?

Currently I am using a VBScript with CScript.exe and a few automation controls to open the URL, retrieve the document and output it to the system console.
I can then use 'xp_cmdshell' to execute the script and parse the returned XML but that's a [dirty] method that's not prefered for obvious reasons.

Any ideas ?
