Default I WANT: VB6 (Classic) integrated into SharpDevelop IDE

I started a thread in their forum asking for this. Any support you guys can show I would appreciate. Since MS will not do this, I would look to anyone else to do it and #Dev seems the best candidate. I would love to get rid of the VB6 IDE and move on to a better one.

Sorry for the post in here, I didn't see a General area just for VB6 related, and to be honest, this had the most viewers. I hope you don't mind my friends

I don't see how the effort involved in that, especially when it comes to the forms designer, would be worth the effort involved in making it happen.

To be realistic, most of the professional shops have moved on, or are only supporting VB6 for legacy stuff. If you want a free IDE and want to program in VB then check out the express edition, that's what it's there for. I wish VB6 had an express edition when I was first learning. This is great though for people just starting now.

Just to begin with you wouldn't get it from the SharpDevelop people because the VB6 compiler is not free (unlike VB.Net compilers).

While the IDE is showing its age it does a lot for you. What kinds of things is it missing that you'd want? Maybe there's an add-in for it already or somebody might create one.

I've searched for some addins. While I purchased codesmart, it does its best to enhance the IDE but cannot do it totally.

Full #region support with collapsing, more color coding in the text editor, better forms editor, better property\event tool window, better support for the thundervb based ideas, more stack tracing etc debugging things in current VS. The list can go on and on. I believe vb6 can compile via command line, it could just be required that original VB6 be installed on the machine in the first place. The new IDE would just strip out whatever is not supported and compile via the VB6 compiler. I don’t know  I don’t see why it’s unfeesable or unthinkable to do something like this. Sure it’s not the latest vb based language, but it’s still a perfectly usable one.

Perhaps it’s more than just that, maybe the whole vb language needs to be reinvented from the ground up like some have tried to do with just the BASIC language (powerbasic etc..) but based on VB6 directly.

Check out this work in progress. It is a #dev add-in for VB6! I've played with it a bit and so far it seems pretty promising, just as long as the community continues to contribute.
