Default COM Addins in Office 97 (Word/Excel/PPT) possible?

Hi,

Is there a way to create COM addins for the Office97 versions of Word/Excel/PPT like you can in Office 2000? In 2000, all I had to do was create designers for each app. However, I can't seem to find a way to do the equivalent thing in Office 97. I couldn't find anything in the Office 97 Visual Basic Programmer's Guide about this. Do I have to manually create the linkup with the app myself?

Thanks,

Chris

Nope, 2000 is the first Office edition to support COM addins.
I've now idea how you could go about mimicking this for '97!

If you manage it, please let us hear about it!...

Thanks for the info. I suspected as much. So there is absolutely no way for me to create macros that modify the toolbar, add buttons, etc during startup of the application automatically? It always has to be attached to a particular document or template?

Sorry, I'm a little new to this, but can I even manually create an IDT2 extensibility bit of code to manually link to the application?

Thanks,

Chris

You don't need COM for that.
You can create addins for all the Office apps which can be used to implement the preferences you refer to.
The only sticky ones are Powerpoint and Word; to register the Application class for these two (and their inherent events), you must run an 'AutoExec' routine from a module in the 'Normal' template VB project.

An example for Word is HERE
and one for Excel is HERE...

Edit:
corrected misleading comment re Word Document events.

Wow, good links, thanks! I've been reading about excel and using the xla file to create add-ins. Do you know if an installation program can automate this process, or whether a user, in order to use my add-in, would have to manually go through the steps described? Save thing for Word and PPT. Can I leveerage templates somehow and have the template automatically create the Application class and work off that?

In addition, do all of these methods hide the code from the user?

Thanks,

Chris

You can lock all projects for viewing, but you will be able to see that they are installed. Besides, addins are read only.

There's no reason why you can't automate all the tasks to do this, I'm not sure about Word and PPT. Each time the application is opened, you must somehow register the class in the addin;
I'm actually having another shot at it now ...

Edit:
I'm growing less certain that the problems I have getting the Document events to fire from the 'Normal' Template, are not just a problem with my setup..

The 'Document_New' event fires just fine, but not the 'Open' - try them yourself - paste the following into the 'ThisDocument' class module in the 'Normal' project:
Code:
Private Sub Document_New()
    Register_EventHandler
End Sub

Private Sub Document_Open()
    Register_EventHandler
End Sub
..oh, you should add the module and the class module (I detailed in the other thread) to the 'Normal' project too!

[Edit]
I have since "discovered" the following to be a fail-safe method of registering the class...
Code:
Sub AutoExec()
    Register_EventHandler
End Sub
